Today, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was sworn into office.

In his acceptance speech, President Trump said:

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families. We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.

The “ravages of other countries.”

Perhaps he was talking about trade. Perhaps he was talking about immigration. As he so skillfully did over the course of the campaign, I believe he was talking about both.

But here is the thing. President Trump, millions of Americans who have been here for generation have come to know the immigrants in their communities. They don’t see them as ravages, they see them as fellow Americans.

Millions of Americans have come to realize that “the ravage of other countries” is their child’s best friend.

Millions of Americans have come to realize that “the ravage of other countries” is the family sitting one pew over in church every Sunday.

Millions of Americans have come to realize that “the ravage of other countries” is the kind and generous family down the street.

Millions of Americans have come to realize that “the ravage of other countries” is the person they work with everyday to bolster our economy.

Regardless of party, millions of Americans see “the ravage of other countries” as people who are part of our great nation.

So, yeah, I come from a family that is “the ravage of other countries.”

And, I am a proud American.
